Day by Day Plan
Day01After breakfast, the tour departs. The first stop is Arusha town for any last-minute purchases. Then drive to Tarangire National Park for a game drive with a picnic lunch in the park. Tarangire is famous for its many elephants and its baobab trees. It is the centre of an annual migration of up to 3000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras.
Highlight: Elephants and baobab trees on your Tarangire game drive.
Day02After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara. Also, the park offers breathtaking views and many habitats. These include acacia woodland, water forest, baobab-strewn cliffs, hot springs, swamps and the lake itself. As a result, the small park supports many animal species and incredible birdlife. Manyara has the largest group of baboons anywhere in the world. Its lions are also famous for climbing trees. The day ends at Lake Eyasi.
Highlight: Many habitats, rich birdlife and tree-climbing lions.
Day03Today you meet the Hadzabe. They live in small groups, hunting with bow and arrows and gathering roots, tubers and wild fruits, much as people did in the Stone Age. See how they survive in a harsh environment and the challenges they face to keep this nomadic life. You also meet the Datoga, who are blacksmiths. This trade developed over centuries and is still practised in much the same way today. They make the arrow heads for the Hadzabe and brass trinkets, some of which are sold by the maker himself.
Highlight: A close look at two of Tanzania’s traditional cultures.
Day04After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and go down over 600 metres into the crater to see wildlife. The crater has water and food all year. It supports wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. It also has many predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. Visit Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake where you can often see flamingos, hippos and water birds.
Highlight: The crater floor, Lake Magadi and a dense population of predators.
Day05After breakfast at the lodge, depart for the Serengeti, one of the most famous wildlife areas in the world. First you reach the Naabi Hill Kopjes, huge granite boulders where you can take a short walk while your guide does the paperwork. Then continue with game drives all afternoon across the Serengeti. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning endless plains.
Highlight: Naabi Hill Kopjes and the endless plains of the Serengeti.
Day06Enjoy a full day of game drives around the Serengeti. What you see depends on the time of year and the migration of the herds. Then, you can expect wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds. Next, you can take a full day with a picnic lunch. Or choose a morning drive and a sunset drive, with a break at the lodge in between.
Highlight: A full day with the Serengeti herds and big cats.
Day07After an early breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive, then continue with game viewing on the way to the north of the Serengeti. Afterward, check out of the park at Klein’s Gate and transfer to Lake Natron for an early dinner and the night. If time allows, take an evening walk at Lake Natron for sunset.
Highlight: Sunset walk at Lake Natron, if time permits.
Day08Climb Oldoinyo Lengai with a night ascent and a dawn summit bid, if seismic conditions allow. Depending on your flight time, there is also an optional waterfall hike and swim. After that, transfer to Arusha for your airport drop-off or an overnight stay.
Highlight: Dawn on Oldoinyo Lengai, if conditions allow.
