Day by Day Plan
Day01Drive from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate to complete park registration. Enter Kilimanjaro National Park and begin trekking through lush montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and a rich variety of birdlife. Then reach Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Highlight: Trek through lush rainforest alive with colobus monkeys on your first day on the mountain.
Continue climbing as the dense rainforest gradually changes into heather and moorland. The trail becomes more open while you gain altitude, revealing beautiful views across the surrounding landscape. Trek toward the Shira Plateau and Shira 1 Camp. There you rest and let your body adjust to the increasing elevation.
Highlight: Climb into the heather zone with wide views over the Shira Plateau.
Day03Enjoy a relatively gentle trekking day across the Shira Plateau. Then, walk through open moorland surrounded by volcanic landscapes and impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The gradual ascent gives valuable acclimatization and lets you enjoy the peaceful scenery before continuing toward the southern circuit.
Highlight: Cross the volcanic Shira Plateau on a gentler day built for acclimatization.
Leave Shira 2 and trek toward Lava Tower before descending into the dramatic Barranco Valley. This climb-high, sleep-lower section gives valuable acclimatization as you prepare for higher elevations. Enjoy impressive views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape and the towering Barranco Wall before settling into camp.
Highlight: Pass beneath Lava Tower before descending into the dramatic Barranco Valley.
Day05Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route. With support from your mountain crew, negotiate the rocky sections before reaching the top. Enjoy spectacular views. From there, continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp for overnight rest.
Highlight: Climb the famous Barranco Wall with support from your experienced mountain crew.
Continue your ascent through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the main base for your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you gain altitude. Arrive at camp, have an early dinner. Organize your summit equipment, and rest as much as possible before the final climb.
Highlight: Push into the alpine desert and rest early ahead of your summit attempt.
Day07Begin your summit attempt during the early morning hours, climbing slowly toward Stella Point along the steep crater slopes. Next, continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters and celebrate reaching Africa’s highest point. After sunrise and photographs, descend through the alpine zone toward Mweka Camp.
Highlight: Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise and stand on the Roof of Africa.
Day08After breakfast, begin your final descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. Complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate before meeting your transfer. Then, continue to Moshi for a well-deserved rest, or proceed to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
Highlight: Descend through the rainforest and collect your official summit certificate.
