Discover Mount Oldoinyo Lengai
Oldoinyo Lengai, “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language — Tanzania’s only active volcano and a sacred peak, with direct views into a smoking caldera.
Oldoinyo Lengai: A Sacred, Active Volcano
Ol’doinyo Lengai (also spelled Oldoinyo Lengai) means “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. Its summit, 2,962 metres above sea level, gives direct views into the caldera of Tanzania’s only officially certified active volcano — and the world’s only carbonatite volcano. Eruptions have been recorded since 1883, the largest depositing ash 120 kilometres away near Arusha and 100 kilometres away in Loliondo.
It lies in northern Tanzania, just south of the soda-ash Lake Natron in the Rift Valley, in the heart of Maasai country and regarded locally as a sacred mountain. From the crater, hot salt flats stretch north towards Lake Natron, the Crater Highlands and Ngorongoro lie to the south, and Kilimanjaro dominates the eastern horizon.
In short, Ol’doinyo Lengai is the Mountain of God in the Maasai language. First, it is Tanzania’s only officially certified active volcano. Then you climb to a summit of 2,962 metres. Also, the summit climb takes six to seven hours.
Because the mountain lies south of Lake Natron, the views are wide. From the crater, you see salt flats to the north and Kilimanjaro on the eastern horizon. Also, Maasai people regard the mountain as sacred. Finally, we can plan the trek for your dates.
