Visit Jozani Forest
Walk beneath a tropical canopy in Jozani Forest and look for the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a very different side of Zanzibar beyond the beaches.
If you want to experience a completely different side of Zanzibar beyond beaches, coral reefs and Stone Town, visiting Jozani Forest should be high on your list. Located in the center-south of Unguja Island, Jozani is famous for its lush forest, wildlife and, most importantly, the Zanzibar red colobus monkey. A visit is usually a relatively short excursion, easy to combine with a beach holiday, Stone Town, a spice farm or other Zanzibar experiences.
In short, Jozani Forest shows a different side of Zanzibar. First, you walk under a tropical forest canopy. Then you look for the Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Also, the forest is part of a conservation area.
Because Jozani lies in the center-south of Unguja, it is easy to add to a Zanzibar day. After that, you can combine it with other experiences. Also, the guide covers what to wear and sample itineraries. Finally, we can arrange your visit.

What Is Jozani Forest?
The forest is a protected forest area on Unguja, Zanzibar’s main island, and part of the wider Jozani–Chwaka Bay Conservation Area. The conservation area covers approximately 30 square kilometers and contains several habitats. UNESCO describes groundwater forest, coral-rag forest, salt marsh, mangrove forest and seagrass habitats, and lists the area on Tanzania’s World Heritage Tentative List.
For visitors, the biggest attraction is walking through the forest and observing wildlife in its natural environment. It is very different from a traditional Tanzania safari: instead of searching open savannah for lions, elephants and giraffes, you walk through a forest looking for monkeys, birds, insects, trees and smaller wildlife.
Where Is It?
Jozani is in the center-south of Unguja, approximately 23 miles south of Zanzibar City according to UNESCO. Travelers staying in Stone Town, Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe, Nungwi or Kendwa can visit as part of an island excursion; the driving time depends on where you stay and road conditions.
The Zanzibar Red Colobus
For most visitors, seeing the Zanzibar red colobus monkey is the main reason to visit. It is native to Zanzibar and one of the island’s most recognizable animals. Walking through the forest is more intimate than watching wildlife from a vehicle: you may hear the monkeys before seeing them, watch them move between branches and observe their social behavior from the forest floor.
There is a good opportunity to see them, but they are wild animals and their location and behavior change through the day. A local guide greatly improves the experience by helping you identify animals, plants and sounds you might otherwise miss.
Other Wildlife
Jozani is not a Big Five destination. Its appeal comes from smaller forest wildlife. Depending on conditions, you may see:
- Red colobus and Sykes’ monkeys
- Bush babies and duikers (the area also supports Ader’s duiker)
- Forest birds and butterflies
- Reptiles, insects and other small forest animals
Not every visitor will see every species.
Mangroves
The wider Jozani–Chwaka Bay environment extends beyond forest. Mangroves are an important part of Zanzibar’s coastal ecosystem, providing wildlife habitat and connecting land and marine environments.
The Jozani Forest Walk
A typical visit follows established forest trails with a guide. It is generally relaxed rather than physically demanding, and much slower than a game drive. Your guide explains:
- Trees and plants and traditional uses of plants
- Monkey behavior and wildlife
- Forest ecology and local conservation
- The importance of the forest to Zanzibar
How Long to Spend
For most travelers a few hours is enough, which makes it easy to pair with another activity: Jozani in the morning and a spice farm, Stone Town or the beach in the afternoon. You do not normally need an entire day unless you want to explore the surrounding conservation area more extensively.
Best Time
Jozani can be visited all year. Dry periods are generally more comfortable for walking, while rainy periods make the forest particularly lush. It is a rainforest environment, so occasional rain is not automatically a problem; keep some flexibility in your itinerary. Morning is often a good choice for cooler temperatures and easier combining of activities, although wildlife sightings depend on animal behavior rather than the hour.
Families, Couples & What to Wear in Jozani Forest
Families: Jozani is an excellent family activity because children can experience wildlife without hours inside a safari vehicle, and learn about monkeys, trees, forest ecosystems, conservation, mangroves and Zanzibar’s unique wildlife. Keep children close and follow the guide; wild animals should never be approached, touched or fed.
Couples: A forest walk is a peaceful change of pace from a beach-focused honeymoon, and combines well with a beach resort, a private dinner, Stone Town, a spice farm, Mnemba snorkeling and sunset experiences.
What to Wear and Bring
- Lightweight trousers or long shorts and a light shirt
- Comfortable walking shoes (heavy hiking boots are unnecessary)
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent
- Drinking water, and a camera or phone
- A light rain jacket, as tropical weather changes quickly
Combine Jozani Forest With Other Experiences
- With Stone Town: Jozani in the morning, return toward Stone Town in the afternoon, explore in the late afternoon and enjoy a Zanzibari dinner. Ideal for limited time.
- With a spice farm: wildlife and forest on one hand, agriculture, food and culture on the other.
- With the beach: from Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe or another coastal area, Jozani is an easy break from the beach.
- With Mnemba: Day 1 Stone Town, Day 2 Jozani and spice experience, Day 3 Mnemba snorkeling, Day 4 beach relaxation: culture, forest and ocean.
Jozani vs a Tanzania Safari
| Jozani Forest | Tanzania Safari |
|---|---|

| Walking experience | Mainly vehicle-based game viewing |
| Red colobus monkeys | Big Five and other large mammals |
| Small-scale wildlife observation | Large-scale wildlife viewing |
| Short excursion | Usually several days |
| Zanzibar | Mainland Tanzania |
If you want lions, elephants, cheetahs and large herds, choose a mainland safari. To discover Zanzibar’s endemic forest wildlife, Jozani is the better choice.
